Freelance Database Owner (Oracle & PostgreSQL)

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Database Owner to take full ownership of a large-scale enterprise database platform supporting critical business applications across multiple countries.

This is not a traditional DBA role.

We are looking for someone who can combine strong database administration experience with technical leadership, stakeholder management and operational ownership.

You will become the technical owner of the database estate, working closely with engineering teams across an international organisation while driving database governance, performance, reliability and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Take end-to-end ownership of a production database estate consisting of more than 40 production databases across Oracle, PostgreSQL and NoSQL technologies.
• Act as the primary technical owner for all database-related topics.
• Work closely with engineering, infrastructure and application teams distributed across multiple countries.
• Coordinate database-related initiatives across organisations with hundreds of developers.
• Drive database governance, standards and best practices.
• Ensure database availability, resilience, security and performance.
• Lead database migrations and modernization initiatives.
• Manage backup, recovery and disaster recovery processes.
• Oversee IAM, roles, permissions and database security.
• Monitor database health and performance.
• Identify bottlenecks and coordinate SQL optimisation and performance improvements.
• Define operational procedures and continuously improve database operations.

What we're looking for

Technical

• Strong DBA background.
• Extensiveexperiencewith:

• Experience administering production databases.

  • Backup & Restore
  • Replication
• Experience with Cloud databases (AWS, Azure or GCP).
• Good understanding of SQL performance tuning.
